Beach, Sun, & Sand {DIY Distressed Sign}

Today I am going to share with you the DIY Distressed Sign I made for a friend.  She has a “woman cave”, and it’s all beach themed.  She also happens to be the secretary where I work, so I thought it’d be awesome to make her something for her beach room as a Secretary’s Day gift!  I had pinned a lot of design ideas to my CC {Carrie’s Cameo} Pinterest board, and finally settled on making my own.  Love it!  I was so tickled to give it to her, and she had lots of squeals over it.  It was a GREAT moment!  Anyway, I am so in awe of all those Etsy ladies who work hard to make these signs and sell them…it’s a lot of work, but the end result is fab!  I didn’t take a ton of pictures along the way, so I am showing you the finished project, and laying it out in step by step directions.  I love it so much, I want to make another one!  The best part is, I used all materials we already had at home-including the wood!

Materials:

Wood {I used a piece of wainscoting we had from finishing our basement}

Paint {I used the “Laguna” from Apple Barrel, Blue Ocean Breeze Krylon spray paint, and a light brown color we had in the basement from the living room}

Sand paper

Paint brush

Vinyl, or a cut letter template

Ruler

Directions:

1.  Wipe down the board so there isn’t any dust or debris on it.  Then, paint it with the “Laguna” color.  Let it dry completely.

2.  After the “Laguna” color is dry, paint the board with the light brown color and allow to dry thoroughly.

3.  When all the paint is dry {I let it dry for a few days}, start sanding it.  Go over it lighter in some spots and harder in others.  The blue color will start to come through, and in some spots the original white color of my board started to show.  For a more detailed tutorial on distressing wood, check out my DIY Distressed Wood Crate.

4.  When you have sanded it down and have the look you want, cut out your letters.  I used my Silhouette Cameo and cut the letters out of vinyl.

5.  Position the letters on the board until you have the spacing right.  We measured our board, and then created the letters accordingly.

6.  When your letters are placed how you want them, take your sign to an open area.  Lightly coat the sign with spray paint, until you have it all covered.  Allow it to dry for about 20 minutes.

7.  After 20 minutes, gently peel the letters off. Voila!  It’s done!

I can’t wait to make more signs with this method!  It was so super easy, and the most “difficult” part was placing the letters where we wanted them….and waiting impatiently for the paint to dry.  The distressing method will work with just about any paint-I have three different types of paint on mine {acrylic, latex, and spray paint} and it turned out fine.

  1. I love this! I’m moving from the east coast to west coast so something like this would be perfect!
