In my house, fall is synonymous with two things. First, football season and second it’s time to bake! Once the weather cools, it is time for relaxing Saturdays and Sundays, watching our favorite teams on TV…or if we are really lucky, in person. However, when we can’t get to the game in person, we do a little “home gating” and enjoy our favorite foods and fun right here in our living room. That being said, I also have three kiddos and a husband to feed during game time. So, we try to keep things fun, easy, and all about the team spirit around our house. While the coaches are sending in players, I am sending in Skittles® to add color and fun to our game time. That is where the Best Sugar Cookies Ever come into play!
Best Sugar Cookies Ever
2/3 c softened butter
3/4 c granulated sugar
1 t baking powder
1/4 t salt
1 T milk
1 t vanilla
2 c all purpose flour
1. In a large mixing bowl, beat butter with an electric mixer on medium to high speed for 30 seconds. Add the granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt. Beat until combined. Beat in milk, egg, and vanilla until combined. Beat in as much flour as you can with the mixer. Stir in any remaining flour.
2. Divide the dough in half. Roll out half on a piece of floured wax paper to about 1/8 inch thick. Then, roll out the other half the same way, and lay them in the refrigerator for about 15 minutes.
3. Using a 2 1/2 inch cookie cutter, but into shapes. Place on a cookie sheet.
4. Bake at 375 for 7-8 minutes or until edges are VERY lightly browned. Transfer to a wire rack and let cool.
I like to make this and freeze half of it. This recipe does make quite a bit of dough. Once the cookies are baked, we pull out our favorite store bought frosting, and start decorating. I like to pick up fun candies and decorating goodies at Giant Eagle, like Skittles®. With so many colors, they make it easy to add some team spirit to our snacks and desserts.
Scoop some frosting into a small bowl, and add food coloring until you get just the right shade. Then, smear it on the surface of your cookie, and top with Skittles. This makes a fun activity for everyone in your family! Plus, the fun Skittles add team spirit and excitement to your food spread.
