Cooking With Kids

Kids love to cook. And now that it’s getting cool enough to finally use the oven without overheating my whole house, I find myself with a lot of little helpers in the kitchen.  One of our favorite meals to make with kids is pizza. There are so many kid-friendly jobs to do while making it — rolling the dough. Grating cheese. Cutting olives (with a butter knife!). “Painting” the sauce onto the dough. And sprinkling the ingredients over the top. It’s all fun and safe and a great way to get them helping out at mealtime. And it helps that everyone loves to eat it!  We make our pizza dough in a breadmaker — here’s our recipe:

 Pizza Dough:


1/2 tsp salt

3 c all-purpose flour

1 1/2 tsp active dry yeast

1 c water

2 Tb olive or vegetable oil

pizza dough

Measure all ingredients into bread pan. Turn on “dough” setting. Check dough after 10 min and add water if it’s too dry, flour if it’s too moist. Allow cycle to run — about 90 min.

We roll the dough out as thin as we can get it, sprinkle on our toppings (LOTS of mozzarella cheese, usually salami, olives and whatever other veggies we have on-hand) and bake at 375 for 20 min or until crust is brown and crispy.
