DIY Minnie Mouse Shirt {Layering with HTV}

This post may contain affiliate links or sponsored content.

My DIY Minnie Mouse Shirt that I am sharing today is one of my all time favorite projects! Layering with HTV {heat transfer vinyl} can seem so intimidating!  That’s what I thought, too, until I gave it a try.  The best tutorial I found was on the Expressions Vinyl Blog.  It was so easy to follow, and once I got the hang of it…now I’m addicted.  But, before I share how I made these DIY Minnie Mouse shirts for our upcoming trip, let me clear some of the fog about using HTV.

What is HTV?  HTV stands for “heat transfer vinyl“.  Basically, this is vinyl you cut with your Silhouette, and then using an iron or a heat press, you TRANSFER it to a piece of clothing. Now that you know what HTV is, I suggest you hurry over to Expressions Vinyl and order yourself some!

Anyway, let’s talk layering.  Layering HTV is simply that-cutting sections of your design, in the desired colors.  Then, you lay down the very “back” of your design.  Iron it on, lay down the next and iron it on…..etc, etc, until you have the design just how you want it.  So, with that being said, let me walk you through how I made these Minnie Mouse shirts for my daughter.

Supplies:

Cotton tshirt

Smooth Black, glitter pink, and glitter silver HTV

Iron

Silhouette Cameo

Iron

Parchment paper

Large piece of wood

1.  Start by setting up your file on your Silhouette software.  I colored in my design, so I could make sure I’m happy with it before I started cutting. If you’d like access to the cut file, there are details at the bottom of the post.

2.  When you have it all set up, highlight the design, and click on the “Ungroup” button.  This is at the bottom left of your screen.  It looks like two little squares, with red dots at the corners.  By “ungroup”ing your design, you can then move out the parts you don’t need.  You’ll then click on the bow and the black Minnie head,  and move them to the side.  You should be left with a Minnie Mouse head shadow.

Offsetting items on Silhouette files

3. Cut the shadow out of silver glitter HTV.  You’ll want to set your cut settings to “blade 3, thickness 18”.

4.  Cut your HTV to be slightly bigger than your Minnie head shadow.  Load your HTV on your cutting mat.  It is VERY important that you lay it SHINY SIDE DOWN.  Make the cut.

5.  Weed the HTV {this means peel away the parts you don’t need}, and you should be left with an outline of a Minnie Mouse head.  Don’t peel it off the shiny carrier sheet.  You need this to iron it on.

6.  Next, take the shadow of your Minnie head and move it to the side.  Cut your smooth, black HTV slightly larger than the Minnie head you are going to cut.  Now, put the black Minnie head back on the design mat.  You’ll load your black, smooth HTV onto your cutting mat, SHINY SIDE DOWN.  Make the cut for this.  You can change your blade back to “blade 2, thickness 15” if you want.  Weed the excess vinyl away, and set the Minnie head aside.

7.  Move away the black Minnie head.  Now, add your bow back onto the cut screen.  Cut a very small piece of bright pink, smooth HTV and load it SHINY SIDE DOWN onto your cutting mat.  Make the cut of the bow.

8.  In front of you, you should have three things-a glittered outline of a Minnie head, a black Minnie head, and a pink bow.  All of these should still be on the shiny carrier sheet.

9.  Heat your iron to the cotton setting, and lay your shirt on a piece of wood.  Position the glittered Minnie head on the center of your shirt.  Lay it down so the shiny carrier sheet is facing upward.  Now, lay a piece of parchment paper on it.  Using even pressure {DON’T run the iron over it like you would normally do}, begin applying pressure, for about 30 seconds.  Pick up the iron, lay it down and put pressure on a different area for 30 seconds.  Do this for about 2 minutes total.

Layering HTV

10.  Remove the parchment paper, and slowly peel back the shiny, clear sheet.  As you are pulling back, watch the edges of your design.  If it begins to pull up, gently repeat the process of putting pressure on it.

11.  Center the black Minnie head inside the glittered outline.  Repeat the ironing process.  MAKE SURE THE ENTIRE area is covered with parchment paper.  You don’t want the iron touching the glittered part you just ironed on.

Minnie Layer 4

12.  Finally, add the bow in the same way.  It’s REALLY important that every layer is protected.  I added an “N” cut out of the Waltograph font to personalize the shirt.  I wanted to do Natalie’s whole name, but I was unsure about the whole HTV process, and didn’t want to start with something too difficult.

  1. One of these days I am going to NEED to buy a Silhouette. I love making t-shirts and this project is so up my alley. Way easier glitter method too. Turned out great!

  2. How well does the HTV hold up in the wash?

    1. Hi, Emily. I think it holds up fabulously. The trick is to wash your shirt first, with no fabric softener. I made my shirts in June, and my daughter has worn hers countless times since then. I wash it inside out, and put it in the dryer on medium/low heat. I haven’t had any trouble with it at all.

      1. Can you dry with dryer sheets when you prewash shirt? TIA

  3. Can you give me some advice on how to save the silhouette file? It seems to be a .pdf file and my silhouette program won’t open it. Thanks! Your tshirt turned out fantastic!

  4. Hi–

I’m sorry to bug you but I love the way your shirt turned out! I do have one question though, like the person posting before me, when I open the file it’s a PDF. Is there another way to open it? Good job on the shirt though…I’m making ours for our Disney trip this Spring Break!

    1. If you download it as a PDF, you should be able to then open it and save as a cut file. If that doesn’t work, email me and I’ll send it as an attachment :). foundmyfavorite@gmail.com
