A very L.O.N.G time ago…like in January…we planned and booked our upcoming vacation to Disney. For us, it’s our third trip as a family. Our first time was when our twins were 4. We went because a relative was interning down there, could get us a discount on resort stay and tickets…and we didn’t know if we’d be able to go again for such a reasonable price. We were wrong :). Then, last summer, we surprised our boys-who were 7 at the time-with a trip to Disney. We kept it a secret, didn’t tell them where we were going until we were on our way, and it was fabulous. THIS time, they know we are going-no surprises up our sleeves this trip-, and we’ve been talking about it for a very long time….enter the countdown poster.
When we reached the “50 Days Until Vacation” point, I decided to make the last few weeks leading up to vacation something fun for them. Our countdown isn’t anything super elaborate, but it’s fun, and could be adapted to any destination.
Here are the supplies I used:
*Standard poster board
*Post it Notes
I measured out 3 “””x3″ ” boxes on the poster and made rows of them-sort of like a huge calendar.
Next, I wrote the numbers 50-1 on post it notes and set them aside.
Then, I spent some time-about an hour or so-searching online for random Disney trivia facts.
I wrote one fact in each box on the posterboard. Then, I covered each with a numbered post it note.
Then, I traced the grid lines with a red marker, printed off a cute picture of Mickey, added some mouse ears in random boxes, and I stuck it on the inside garage door wtih magnets.
When I do it again, I’m going to add more decoration-print outs, pictures from past vacations, or stickers to embellish it more.
Every day, the boys take turns pulling off a post it and reading that day’s fact. It’s become part of our dinner routine, and has led to some fun discussions and reliving of our past Disney vacations.
I think this could work for any destination-facts are very abundant online!
