Rock the Red {Lipstick}

Hey, friends!  It’s so fun talking with you all about fashion once a month here at My Favorite Finds, and this month I have an important piece advice for you to keep in mind this fall.

Don’t be afraid to rock the red!

Lipstick, that is.

I don’t know about you, but I have this little internal dialogue that goes on every time I reach for red lipstick.  The style-savvy side of me {you know, the one that reads Lucky and In Style and People Style Watch and knows what’s hot for this season} says, “Go for it!  It’ll look awesome with that outfit!” But the other side of me, the conservative “wasn’t stylish as a kid and got picked on” part says, “No!  It’s too much!” As soon as I put it on, I feel like everyone is going to stare and I worry that I kind of look like a … um… ahem…”lady of the night,” shall we say.

Maybe you feel the same way.  But guess what.  Red rocks.  How do I know?  Well, I posted the above photo on Facebook to ask for opinions and {are you ready for this?} I got 73 comments, all of which were positive, and a whopping 190 likes!

Now, that’s not to say red lipstick goes with everything…there are definitely certain outfits and occasions where it’s probably not the best choice.  But here are a few tips for rocking the red with certain things you probably have in your wardrobe!

1. Rock the Red with a Little Black Dress.
Or a little white dress.  Or a little black and white dress.  In fact, red looks great with anything black and/or white.  It’s the perfect way to add a pop of color to a black and white outfit.  Navy and white look fabulous with red too…gives off a nautical vibe that’s cool and sexy at the same time!

2. Rock the Red with Polka Dots!
As long as your polka dots aren’t light blue and yellow, this combo has a great vintage-y 50’s feel to it.  This particular polka dot peplum top from Express is one of my personal favorites at the moment!

3. Rock the Red with…well, RED!
If you’re wearing an outfit with other red accessories, like a cardigan, shoes, earrings, or a clutch, tie the look together by finishing it off with red lips too.

It also works great if you happen to moonlight as a pirate.  Which I’m pretty sure doesn’t apply to most of you.  But, just sayin’…

So, what’s my go-to choice for rocking red lips?  I’m glad you asked!  My personal favorite…and what you see in all of the photos in this post…is Rimmel by Kate #10.

It’s super-pigmented, glides on really smoothly, and lasts for a long time.  It’s very matte, though, so I often apply a clear lip gloss over it for a bit of shine.  Speaking of lasting a long time, though, it even withstands my inevitable stop at Starbucks…

So, what about you?  Are you feeling bold enough to rock this trend?
