Hi! It’s Jilly. A couple weeks ago we were able to visit my sister in New York City! It was so much fun, but it seems like everything is The City is EXPENSIVE! Yikes!
But, you can have a great time AND save money at the same time!
Getting from A to B
Avoid driving if you can! We drove there because we live about 3 1/2 hours from NYC, but spent a huge chunk of our time looking for parking spots! Bleck! Take the Subway or walk! If you will be there for a while, or plan on using the subway a lot, buy an unlimited Metro Card. Well worth it! Download an app like Embark NYC (on iTunes) or New York Subway Map (on Google Play) to help you get on the right trains!
If you DO drive, use an app like Best Parking to find out where you can park nearby. And, you might want to buy an EZ Pass to get a reduced fare on tolls. If you will have 3 or more people in your car, choose the Carpool Plan for an even better deal! BUT, make sure you order one a couple weeks before your trip, because they have to mail it to you, and it can take 24-48 hours for it to be activated. (We learned that one the hard way.)
Museums on the Cheap
There are many museums that are free or “pay as you wish” on certain days. We were even able to visit the American Museum of Natural History, of “Night at the Museum” fame!
Central Park is amazing! We went to Central Park 3 or 4 times, and we still didn’t see the whole thing! It is beautiful! Download this app to help you navigate the park and to learn interesting things about all the attractions.
Hit the Beach
Another cheap and fun thing to do is visit the beach. There are several beaches you can get to on public transportation! We spent a whole day at Rockaway Beach, and it was perfect!
One last tip…make sure you take CASH with you! Many souvenir shops, food trucks, and restaurants only take cash. We found ourselves scrounging for change a couple times because we forgot to bring cash and didn’t want to pay ATM fees.
I hope you have fun in The City That Never Sleeps!
