When we head out on vacation, I can’t stand to leave behind a cluttered, dirty house. When I return home from a week of no cooking, cleaning, or other household responsibilities, I don’t like to see a pile of laundry, dishes, or toys waiting for me to tend to them.
I know, I know. You might be thinking that is crazy. I’ll be gone for a week, it can wait, right?! Or like my husband says, “Why clean? So if someone breaks in they’ll find a clean house?” Ha ha. Isn’t he funny :)?! The truth is, the only chore I want to do when I get home is start the laundry and make a stop at the post office to collect the mail. Keep in mind, I don’t do everything on this list the night before we leave.
**Clean sheets for all! I wash and dry all our bed sheets and make them a day or so before we leave. That way, they’re fairly clean when we get home.
**Wash the dishes/run the dishwasher. This is usually a last minute chore. Even if I start the dishwasher as we’re leaving, I’m okay with clean dishes sitting in it while we’re gone.
**Vacuum and clean the bathrooms. Along with this, I send the boys around to make sure the toilets are flushed.
**Clean up all the toys.
**Clear off the counters. I’m a counter freak….they’re not cluttered when we’re home, they’re not going to be cluttered while we’re gone.
**Clean out the refrigerator. I’ll often give our milk to my parents or a neighbor. I clean out the leftover containers as well as the produce and deli drawers.
**Close the blinds and curtains. Not only does this help our house stay cool, it also keeps wandering eyes from checking out our house :).
**Quick grocery trip. I grab a few frozen breakfast items, some frozen pizzas, and a couple lunchables to have waiting for us when we get back.
How do you leave your home for vacation? Do you pack and run, hoping to get to it when you get home? What other suggestions do you have?
