Chocolate Chip Cake Mix Muffins
Chocolate Chip Cake Mix Muffins are so easy and delicious! If you want an excuse to eat chocolate cake for breakfast, this is it! Making these muffins is easy, and they are a great afternoon treat….or breakfast!
I really like to use a cake mix as a base for baked goods. It works well in a pinch, and the results are delicious! My favorite cake mix recipe is my Chocolate Chip Cake Mix Cookies, but making muffins out of cake mix is easy as well!
You can take a boring box of cake mix, and turn it into about anything! Plus, it is economical and easy. I even have a whole post dedicated to Cake Mix Recipes!
Whether you are hosting brunch, or you want a sweet breakfast treat for your family, muffins are a popular choice. I like having them on hand to grab when going out the door in the morning, or to an afternoon practice.
Some of my favorite muffin recipes:
Bakery Style Chocolate Chip Muffins
It really doesn’t get any easier than starting with a cake mix in a box, and adding some on hand ingredients, like eggs and oil! This is a kid friendly recipe, and even the youngest bakers can help!
Ingredients for Chocolate Chip Cake Mix Muffins
- 1 box Chocolate Cake Mix {I used Devil’s Food Cake}
- 2 Tablespoons all purpose flour
- 3 eggs
- 2/3 cup milk
- 1/3 cup vegetable oil
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 1/2 cups chocolate chips or chunks of chocolate
How to Make Chocolate Chip Cake Mix Muffins
- First, preheat your oven to 375 degrees. Line a muffin tin with cupcake liners.
- Combine the chocolate chips and 2 Tablespoons of flour. Coat the chocolate chips in the flour, and set aside.
- In a separate bowl, add the cake mix, eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and baking powder. Stir until combined.
- Next, add the chocolate chips to the batter and stir them in. Scoop the batter into the muffin tin.
- Bake at 375 for about 20 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Cool in the tins for 5-7 minutes, then move to a wire rack.
This recipe should make between 12-16 muffins. They are best served warm, but are also great with a glass of milk if you are in a hurry. They freeze well, too!
Tips for Freezing Muffins
- Bake the muffins according to the directions and allow them to cool completely.
- Place the muffins on a baking tray that’s been lined with parchment paper.
- Then place the baking tray in the freezer to flash freeze the muffins for about 30 to 60 minutes. Make sure the muffins are frozen and not still soft otherwise they will stick together when you freeze them.
- Place the frozen muffins in a freezer safe container or plastic bag.
- Muffins frozen like this should last at least two months.
Baking muffins is easy, especially when you start with a cake mix! Make sure you store them in an airtight container.
Tips for Baking Muffins:
- Spray the cupcake liners with non-stick cooking spray to make sure the muffin doesn’t stick. This keeps your paper liners from sticking to your baked muffins.
- Bake muffins or cupcakes on the center rack of your oven.
- If for some reason, the muffin pan is not completely filled with muffin batter, fill the empty cups in the pan with water.
- Always follow baking time directions, but you’ll know when the muffins are done when you insert a toothpick into the center of the muffin and it comes out clean or with just a few crumbs sticking to it. If you have batter sticking to the toothpick, you need to bake them for a few extra minutes.

Do you like to make muffins for your family? If so, what is your favorite flavor?
These are quick and awesome to make. I add toasted nuts to mine. I experimented last time and bought a cherry chip, added toasted sliced almonds, chocolate chips and in the middle, I added low calorie cherry pie filling. OMG my hubby loved 🥰 them. Thanks for the recipe 😊🇨🇦
