Do you get as excited as I do about shopping for school supplies? I think it’s the former teacher still buried inside of me. Something about wandering the back to school section at the store, picking out colorful notebooks and fun pens…I just love it. And then you add in the vinyl ideas….and I’m over the top! With a rising 5th grade girl on my hands, creating something cute and unique for her to use for school makes me happy!
In years past, we’ve taken the easy way out and ordered the school supply kit from the PTO. This year, looking forward to a locker of her own and being the oldest in the school, she asked if we could DIY some school supplies. Of course!
There is nothing quite as fun as new notebooks, fresh pencils, or a new backpack. There is something fun about adding your personal touch to your school supplies, so I thought I’d ask the user of said supplies her opinion. Being obsessed with all things dance, she wanted fun dance quotes on her notebooks, folder, and clipboard. We scoured Pinterest to find just the right words, and she is so happy with the end results! After putting these cute ideas together, I wanted to share some tips for personalizing and adding a DIY touch to your school supplies!
HOW to DIY School Supplies
First, start small. Labeling a pencil box is a super simple project. All you need to use is the text box in your Silhouette Design Space and choose the font you love. Cutting out names in various sizes lets you add a personal and practical touch to almost anything!
A second fun way to add a personal touch to school supplies is choosing your favorite colors in vinyl to compliment your notebooks and such. I like to use the StyleTech Craft Glossy Craft Vinyl as my starting point. Tons of colors and I love the finish. Also, it’s super easy to weed. From there, I pull in other finishes such as the StyleTech Metalized or Ultra Metallic to add some sparkle to the design.
Choosing your favorite animal, a quote, flowers, Disney characters, or anything that makes you happy is perfect! This is a great idea if you are concerned about having your child’s name visible to strangers. No one else will have the exact same designs!
Tips for Using Adhesive Vinyl on School Supplies:
Choose a bold, thick font. These are easy to read, cut nicely, and weed easily. I have learned over and over, first hand, that a thin font with lots of script is not the right font for projects like this.
Use a large font. My daughter had chosen some quotes that were VERY long. I found that on adding those to my design space, they would have to be fairly small when I cut them to all fit on the surface. In turn, that was going to be a pain to weed, or possibly not work out at all. So keep it simple so you can use a larger font. It makes things much easier!
Use a permanent vinyl. Using a removable won’t work well, since school supplies need to be durable.
First, type out the name, quote, etc in your Silhouette Studio Design software. Next, choose the Glossy Vinyl Setting from the cut screen, and send it to cut. Remove {aka weed} the excess vinyl from your design. Cut the transfer tape to the size of your design. Peel the backing off the transfer tape, and lay it sticky side down on the top of your design. Carefully peel the backing off your vinyl. Transfer the design to your surface. Before removing the transfer tape, smooth over the transfer tape to assure it is smooth and sticking to the surface. Carefully remove the transfer tape. Peeling it back at an angle works best for me.
