One of my favorite aspects of creating with my Silhouette Cameo is the literally endless possibilities. Fonts, designs, projects, techniques….it’s endless! I feel SO creative when I fire up my machine! Using acrylic bookmark blanks, StyleTech Craft vinyls, and my cutting machine, I easily had these created in very little time. But they are SO cute!

Creating DIY bookmarks, I feel like I need to not only personalize them, but also keep the design simple. The design space is a bit small. So using fun colors, great fonts, and layering makes them look impressive, and not so plain.

Supplies for DIY Bookmarks

How to Make DIY Bookmarks

First, set up your design in Silhouette Design Studio. Clean the acrylic blanks with rubbing alcohol and set them aside.

Next, choose your fonts. For this project, I used the fonts Sign Painter, The Giant and the Mouse, and Impact. I also used a Dingbat font for the brush painted look on the bottom layer of my design. Type your text into the design screen, and size it to fit your blank. After measuring my bookmarks, I sized my design 5.25 across and 2 inches high.

Place the vinyl on the cutting mat. I cut my background layer first, then cut the names. These are two separate files and separate cuts. Weed the vinyl, and set it aside.

Then, place transfer tape over the shiny side of the brush painted design. Turn it over, and gently peel off the white backing. Center this on the blank, and burnish it so it is adhered to the surface really well. Repeat this process with the text.

How cute are these?!

Tips for Layering Vinyl

Layering vinyl can be challenging, especially if you are working with a large design. With these tips, you can easily layer any design, no matter how big or small!

Trim as much of the carrier sheet as you can. After you’ve weeded the vinyl, trim the edges of the white carrier sheet as close to the design as you can.

Use transfer tape with grid lines. This makes it SO much easier to line your designs up on your surface.

Use the smoothest layer of vinyl on the bottom layer. This is important when working with adhesive vinyl that may have a texture to it, such as glitter vinyl.

Burnish each layer. It’s best to layer two, MAYBE three colors. When doing so, burnish in between, before you apply the next layer.
