DIY Christmas Gift Tags
These DIY Christmas Gift Tags are so fun, and easy to make! The customization options are endless, and they add an extra touch to your packages. Everyone needs a little extra shine and sparkle during the Christmas holidays, and these gift tags give you exactly that!

Years ago, I began cutting out my own gift tags using my Silhouette Cameo. Right after Thanksgiving, I spend some time sending card stock through my machine, cutting gift tags to use on our packages. Not only does this save me money, but it also allows me to color coordinate or even create tags around a fun theme!
This year, I am sprucing them up even more with some luster vinyl from StyleTech Craft, as well as some buffalo check card stock and wood gift tags. Combining these three materials gives me the farmhouse, vintage look. It also allows me to customize…and they will look SO cute tied on packages or attached to gift bags!
I think these gift tags will be especially adorable against white wrapping paper, or a pretty solid silver or red. I can’t wait to use them! You could even add them as an “extra” and the recipient could hang them on their Christmas tree! So fun!
Creating DIY Christmas Gift Tags is simple and easy, and I am excited to share this with you today!
Materials Needed for DIY Christmas Gift Tags
- Silhouette Cameo {or similar cutting machine}
- 12×12 sheets of card stock of your choosing {I chose a Buffalo Check in both red and white}
- StyleTech Craft Luster Vinyl {I chose the Bright Green Luster, as well as some Ultra Metallic and Metalized finishes}
- Wood Gift Tags
- Silhouette Cutting Mat
- Vinyl Weeding Tools
- Transfer Tape
How to Make Christmas Gift Tags
- First, you need to design the gift tags. My Silhouette Software came with a gift tag template, and I still use it to this day! You could also import a simple shape, such as a rectangle. That would work as well with the wood gift tags from the craft store.
- Next, size your gift tag accordingly. For this project, my wood gift tags are 4″ long by 2.5″ wide. Since you want your card stock to be slightly smaller than your blank, size it accordingly. I cut a few test pieces of card stock before committing to the buffalo check, so I could get the sizing correct.
- Then, add your card stock to the cutting mat, and choose the correct setting to cut. I filled my design screen with as many gift tags as possible, and cut a full sheet of red and a full sheet of black/white.
- Gently remove the gift tags from the cutting mat using a spatula and set aside.
- From here, add your text. I chose holiday words, such as “NOEL, JOY, CHEER, BELIEVE, MERRY, PEACE”, etc. The options are endless! To get the sizing correct, I simply typed the word, and lined it up on the gift tag on the screen, and sized it accordingly.
- Cut your vinyl, and gently remove it from the cutting mat. From here, weed it, trim it, and set it aside.
- Next, adhere the card stock tags to the wood tags. You can use Mod Podge, spray adhesive, or even a glue stick! After you have added the card stock to the tag, add your vinyl. Now, it’s time to add these to some pretty packages and let the gift giving begin!
Tips for the BEST Gift Tags
- Keep your gift tag design simple. Removing card stock from a cutting mat can be kind of tricky, and the more intricate designs you have, the more likely it will be to tear.
- Choose wide, easy to weed fonts. You have decent space to cover on your gift tag, so this is also a good time to widen some of your more narrow fonts and those can be used as well.
- Before adding your transfer tape, stick it on your shirt or pant’s leg and peel it off. This helps it not be SO sticky, and it is less likely to tear your paper or remove the ink.
- Cut two pieces of each pattern, and add the card stock to the front and back of the wooden tag. But, just add the text to one side! Then, you can add a name to the back, or nothing at all and it can be a cute ornament or keepsake!
- Instead of using Christmas words, use the name of the recipient. What an extra special touch!
