DIY Matching Game

I really love creating home decor and Disney themed projects with my Silhouette Cameo. So creating this homemade game was a bit out of my “normal” creating zone. However, as a mom to older kids, I took a leap to create this DIY Matching Game for my youngest niece. This project is so fun, but can be a little tedious. Using a Silhouette makes it easier, and so fun to customize!

One thing I continuously love over and over about my StyleTech Craft, a project like this is limitless.

I chose a set of sea creatures from my Silhouette Library, and I pulled pieces from past projects to create the images for the matching game. I started with three packages of wooden stars, some white craft paint, and an idea to create 12 sets of matching images, I am so excited with how these turned out!

Why Use Adhesive Vinyl?

  • First, it’s durable. The StyleTech Craft Gloss Vinyl is the most durable of their options, in my opinion. It adheres smoothly to the surface. And it is durable, which is important because little hands will be playing this game!
  • There are SO many color options. When creating this, keep in mind what you want the child to match. Is it color? Shape and color? Just shape? There are so many fun ideas, and the bright colors make it extra appealing and fun. This is a GREAT project for using scraps as well!
  • Adhesive vinyl weeds easily and is easy to apply. When applying to wood, I highly suggest preparing the surface for vinly, and making sure it is smooth.

Supplies for a DIY Matching Game

How to Make a Matching Game

First, smooth the wooden shapes with some sand paper, and wipe the surface clean with a soft cloth. Next, coat them with craft paint on both sides.

While these are drying, set up your cut files in your Silhouette Design Studio. Once you select your images, you will want to size them to fit in the middle of your shape. Make a duplicate of each shape, since you need to cut two!

After your shapes are sized, it’s time to cut! Choose your vinyl colors. Set up your cut screen with two shapes at a time. Move the others to the side of the design screen until you are ready to cut them. Since you are cutting pairs of different colors, you will not be cutting them all at once.

Next, weed the excess vinyl from your shapes. Trim them, if need be, so you can apply them one at a time to the shape. Add transfer tape to the top of each shape, and gently peel the backing off.

Align the vinyl on your wood shape, and smooth over it with a burnishing tool. Gently peel back the transfer tape, and your shape should be adhered to your surface.

The matching game travels easily, and is so fun to have on hand! It makes a fun Christmas stocking stuffer, classroom gift, or even a non-candy Easter basket stuffer!
