DIY Spice Jar Labels

It is no secret that I love a nice, organized pantry and kitchen space. Walk into my kitchen, and my counters are basically cleared, the pantry is organized into zones with most items in labeled containers, and my spice jars look pretty. Yes, my spice jars. They are all the same size, labeled, and placed in alphabetical order in my drawer…and I am not even kidding!

After undergoing a major kitchen renovation, we eliminated almost all of our upper cabinets in our kitchen. This meant my spice jars needed a new home. I decided to place them in a kitchen drawer, and I actually really like it! However, in order for them to fit the best, and not be a jumbled mess, I decided that creating my own labels and using the same size jars was the best way to go!

I had no idea these super cute, blank glass spice jars existed, but Amazon told me they did! So I ordered a set….which of course came with their own labels…but those were not going to work! I needed to make my own!

With all my StyleTech Craft Vinyl on hand, I decided a simple white gloss vinyl was perfect for this project. These could EASILY be customized to match your kitchen colors, but in our house those can change, and I didn’t want to be locked into a color, so I used white. Aren’t they cute?

Materials for DIY Spice Jar Labels:

How to Make DIY Spice Jar Labels

First, clean your jars thoroughly. Wash them in warm soapy water and let them dry thoroughly. Then, prepare the surface for vinyl by giving them a nice cleaning with some rubbing alcohol.

While these are drying, make a list of your spices you keep on hand, or what you already have. As part of this process, you are going to decant those into these cute new containers!

Open the design settings on your software, and start adding the text. This project is text only, so it should be super simple, and is great for a beginner! Using your list of spices, add the name of each to the design screen. Be sure to choose an easy to read font. Some of the classic fonts are great for a project like this!

Size each label to about 4″x1″. My jars are approximately 4 inches tall and 1 inch wide. You may have to adjust a few individually, based on the number of letters in the word.

Load the glossy vinyl onto the cutting mat, and send it to cut. When it is finished, remove the excess vinyl and weed the small pieces out of the words.

Begin placing the labels on your spice jars. For mine, I lined up the first letter at the bottom of the jar, so it would go up the middle of the jar from top to bottom. This placement works well, whether you arrange them on a shelf or lay them in a drawer.

After you have labeled each one, it’s time to fill them! Start filling them and arranging them in your drawer or on the shelf. I prefer to arrange them alphabetically…..it just makes them look so much cuter and things are easier to find!

Isn’t that the cutest? Now, instead of a hodge podge of random spice jars and containers, they are all the same size and labeled! While you could definitely use Removable Vinyl for these, I don’t really change up my spices very often. So permanent adhesive works just fine for me! However, if you do want to possibly change color or redo them at a later date, removable vinyl would be the best.

This simple, but useful DIY project will have part of your kitchen organized in no time!

  1. You’ve inspired me. I got my husband to clear out a drawer. (items that shouldn’t be in a kitchen) and I’m going to follow your example. Yours look so great.

Hi! I really like the modern look of your jars – what font did you use? I have looked high and low!

    1. THanks! I purchased them from Amazon. I do not recall the font.
