DIY Wooden Serving Tray
I love having a seasonal centerpiece on our table or island. Our kitchen is blessed with a giant island. We eat around it often, but it is also used for the typical meal prep as well! It’s the center of our kitchen, and I like it to be pretty! I like to keep a tray on the island or table for function as well. Utensils, a “catch all”, bowls of fun treats…it definitely gets used!
When I have a blank slate, like this round wooden tray I found at the craft store, the ideas are endless! It’s so easy to create something seasonal, or even to use year round like my “HOME Tray”. To get started on this project, it just takes a few supplies and easy steps! The purpose of this tray is decorative, and I won’t be placing food ON the tray. If you are going to put food ON the tray itself, make sure your supplies are food safe!
Supplies for a DIY Wooden Serving Tray
Style Tech Craft Vinyl {I used a luster finish in “Champagne” as well as a gloss finish in brown}
Silhouette Cameo or similar vinyl cutting machine
A Round Piece of Wood
Paint or Stain
Sand Paper
Weeding Tools {hook, tweezers, etc}
Scraper
How to Make a DIY Wooden Serving Tray with Vinyl
First, cover your wood piece in paint or stain. I gave mine a coat of gray and let it dry completely. Then, I gave it a coat of white. From there, I distressed it to give it a nice farmhouse look. After you have distressed it with the sandpaper, go over it with a microfiber cloth to remove any extra dust.
While the paint is drying, begin working on your cut file. I chose to create a straight cut, not curve the text, to go along the bottom of the tray. Using a nonscript font, I typed “give” in my design space. Then, using a script font, I typed “thanks”. I sized these appropriately for my tray, and arranged them on the design screen to give me the end result. Finally, I added some nice fall accents to the design.
Next, you will need to cut in two phases if you are using two different styles/colors of vinyl. The Style Tech Craft Luster and Gloss Vinyl both have the same cut settings on my machine, so that makes it super easy! Also, they each weed like a dream! So it’s super quick and easy to cut and weed these two types of vinyl!
Then, select and move the “thanks” and fall accents to the side of your screen, so the “give” remains on the design screen. From here, load your vinyl and cut this. Next, move the “give” to the side, and repeat with the “thanks” and fall accents.
After the vinyl is cut, remove the excess. I like to start with the insides of my letters, so I’ll weed the middle of the “g” and “e” in “give” first, for example. Then move to the corners and gently, using the hook, peel back the vinyl at an angle to remove the rest of the excess.
Finally, when your paint is dry and vinyl is cut, you add the design to your tray. First, cut a piece of transfer tape a bit larger than your design. Then, using transfer tape, add the design to the wooden tray. Gently rub over it with the scraper tool to help it stick to the wood. Carefully, and at an angle holding the transfer tape close to the design, peel the transfer tape off.
This project is so easy and customizable. The possibilities are endless! Add some mini pumpkins, fixings for hot tea or cocoa, or even your favorite fall candies to this tray! You can proudly display it on your counter or table to add some fall charm to your home.
