Easy Peanut Blossom Cookies
Peanut Blossoms are really a classic Christmas cookie, aren’t they? It’s almost Christmas, and you know what that means! It’s time to bake those Christmas cookies! Do you have a “go to” Christmas cookie? I think we all do…and these Peanut Blossoms are mine! Since I have an eternal love for peanut butter and chocolate, these are perfect. My grandma has been making these for as long as I can remember, and now they’re a favorite in my family.
Every year, we look forward to making some “fancy”, more detailed cookies at Christmas. I do have a slight obsession with sprinkles, and they just make cookies look so darn cute and festive! I like to use the red or green sugar sprinkles for my Peanut Blossoms. I think they look super festive. And in turn, using pink and red or pastel color sugars allows these cookies to be great any season of the year! These are SO easy, and quick to make. You will want to make them for every holiday!
What ingredients do I need for Peanut Blossom Cookies?
1/2 cup shortening
1/2 cup smooth peanut butter
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/8 teaspoon baking soda
1 egg
2 Tablespooons milk
1 3/4 cup all purpose flour
Hershey Kisses {unwrapped}
Extra Sugar {to cover the cookie dough}
How do I make Peanut Blossoms?
First, heat the oven to 350 degrees. Unwrap your Hershey Kisses, and set them aside in a separate bowl.
Then, in a mixing bowl, add the shortening and peanut butter and mix until smoothed together. I like to use my paddle attachment for this. Add the sugar, brown sugar, baking soda, and baking powder, continuing to mix until combined
Next, add the egg, milk, and vanilla. Finally, add the flour and mix well.
From here, shape the dough into 2 inch balls. Roll these in the colored sugar and place them two inches apart on an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake these for 10-12 minutes. Remove them from the oven, and immediately place a Hershey’s kiss in the middle of the cookie. Then, transfer to a wire rack and let them cool.
This recipe makes the softest, chewiest cookies. I like to store them in a fun Christmas tin. They keep for several days if they are sealed well. If they start to dry out a bit, add a piece of bread in the container. This will soften them right up! You can even freeze them! To defrost them, set them out at room temperature in the same container you froze them in. When they reach room temperature, you can open the container and enjoy them!
Also, be sure to press the Hershey’s kiss firmly into the just baked cookie. This creates a small edge around the base of the kiss, assuring it will stay on your cookie after it cools.
Finally, not only can you customize your cookies with colored sugars, but also with the chocolates! Use Hershey Hugs, or even heart shaped Hershey candies during the Valentine’s Day season to add some extra fun to your cookies.
I love the colored sugar on these–it makes them look so festive!
