Walt Disney World Moderate Resorts-Why They May NOT be the Best Option for Your Trip
As a travel advisor, and frequent Walt Disney traveler myself, choosing the right Walt Disney World Resort is KEY to a great trip. What is “right” to one person is “wrong” to another. But really, can you go wrong? I don’t think so. But, as I work with guests everyday on Disney vacations, one thing that is super important in the planning process has two sides. One, I need to offer you a Walt Disney World Resort option that you love and think will work best for your family. And two, YOU need to feel confident in your choice. Choosing the right Walt Disney World resort is one of the most important decisions you’ll make for your trip.
With so many Disney resort options across different price points, it’s essential to find the best fit for your family’s needs. One of Disney’s Moderate Resorts is in my top 3 favorite on property! But, that doesn’t mean a moderate is a good fit for everyone. Walt Disney World Moderate Resorts are a step up from Value Resorts, offering more fine detailed theming, slightly larger rooms, and additional amenities. However, they aren’t the perfect choice for everyone. Before booking a Moderate Resort, consider these key factors that might make you rethink your decision.

Walt Disney World Moderate Resorts Have a Large Footprint.
One of the biggest differences between Moderate Resorts and Value or Deluxe Resorts is their sheer size. These resorts are designed with a sprawling layout, often broken into multiple “neighborhoods” or sections, which can make getting around a bit of a challenge. Some, including Disney’s Caribbean Beach & Disney’s Coronado Springs, even have their own internal bus system to make it easier on guests.
If your room is in one of the farthest sections from the main building, be prepared for long walks—especially if you need to grab a quick bite, refill your resort mug, or catch a bus to the parks. While some guests enjoy the peaceful and immersive atmosphere, others find the extra walking inconvenient, particularly after a long day at the theme parks.
This is something to consider if you have young kids, mobility concerns, or simply prefer easy access to the main amenities.

Internal Bus Loops Can Add to Travel Time.
Because Moderate Resorts cover a lot of ground, Disney uses internal bus loops to accommodate guests throughout the resorts. This means that before your bus even leaves for the theme parks, it may stop at several locations within the resort to pick up additional passengers.
If you’re staying at the last bus stop before the exit, this might not be a big deal. But if you’re at the first stop, you could spend extra time waiting as more guests board before the bus actually heads toward the parks. During busy times, such as rope drop or park closing, this can add noticeable time to your commute.
For guests who value efficiency and convenience, this can be a dealbreaker. Deluxe Resorts, in comparison, typically offer alternative transportation options like monorails, boats, or even direct walking paths to the parks, making travel significantly faster. Another alternative is to choose a resort on the Skyliner-these all have two forms of park transportation and do not rely soley on Walt Disney World motorcoaches.

Pricing vs. Value – Should You Upgrade?
Moderate Resorts are considered a mid-tier option at Walt Disney World, offering a nice balance between affordability and upgraded features. They are often an easy step up from Value Resorts, providing:
- More intricate theming and immersive resort designs
- Larger rooms with a bit more space and upgraded furnishings
- Additional recreational activities, such as boat rentals and biking
- Sit-down dining options in addition to food courts
However, when comparing cost versus value, it’s worth asking: Would upgrading to a Walt Disney World Deluxe Resort be a better investment?
Here’s why some guests choose to splurge on a Walt Disney World Deluxe Resort instead:
- Better Transportation Options – Many Deluxe Resorts offer monorail access, boat transportation, or are within walking distance to one or more parks, significantly cutting down travel time.
- Smaller, More Walkable Resorts – Deluxe Resorts are typically more compact, meaning no long treks to the lobby, dining, or transportation.
- More Dining and Recreation Choices – Disney’s Deluxe Resorts feature signature dining experiences, character meals, lounges, and even rooftop restaurants with fireworks views.
While Moderate Resorts still offer great perks, if you’re already considering one, it may be worth crunching the numbers to see if upgrading to a Deluxe would enhance your trip experience.

Who Should Consider a Moderate Resort?
Despite these drawbacks, Moderate Resorts can still be a fantastic choice! They’re perfect for:
- Guests who want a quieter, more scenic resort with lush landscaping
- Families looking for a balance between affordability and upgraded amenities
- Those who don’t mind extra walking and slightly longer bus rides
If you’re looking for an immersive Disney experience at a mid-range price point, the Walt Disney World Moderate Resorts are still a solid choice. However, if convenience, efficient transportation, and proximity to the parks are your priorities, a Deluxe Resort may be worth considering.
Final Thoughts – Is a Moderate Resort Right for You?
At the end of the day, the best resort for your Disney vacation depends on your family’s needs and travel style. Moderate Resorts strike a balance between budget and comfort, but they aren’t ideal for everyone. Before booking, consider how important convenience, transportation, and resort size are to your overall experience.
