DIY Pallet Christmas Tree

Do you love the look of wood trees? I do! I love to decorate our home with all sorts and styles of Christmas trees. Small, large, wood, fabric….you name it, and we probably have some form of it in a Christmas tree! Today, I am going to show you how to make the EASIEST DIY Pallet Christmas Tree with a few simple supplies and StyleTech Craft Adhesive vinyl.

These super cute, easy DIY pallet Christmas trees will be perfect for your windowsill, mantel, or entryway table this Christmas season! While you can take the time to assemble these from pallet wood, I chose the easy way-and found these cute already assembled trees at the craft store! Yay!

Every year for Christmas, I create a homemade gift for our church leadership and their families. Over the years, I have made wood signs, Nativity shadowboxes, stacked books, Christmas lanterns….and this year I decided on pallet Christmas trees. I love the ease of the unfinished trees I found at the craft store, and the end result is adorable!

I am making five of these total, each will have a different Christmas hymn or Bible verse on it. Each family gets something similar, but different. Part of the fun is when they open them, and see what everyone received!

To make these DIY Pallet Christmas trees, you really just need a few simple supplies. As per usual, my StyleTech Craft Vinyl stash is impressive, and I chose a red glossy adhesive vinyl for this particular tree I am showing you today. As I work to make the rest, I will paint some gray, some a dark blue, and probably a few more whites. In turn, I will use a coordinating vinyl color so they all look different!

Applying vinyl to these wood Christmas trees is easy with the right steps and preparing your surface properly!

Materials for a DIY Pallet Christmas Tree

  • Wood Christmas Tree {you can make this yourself or purchase an unfinished, pre assembled one}
  • Craft paint
  • Silhouette Cameo or similar cutting machine
  • StyleTech Craft Adhesive Vinyl
  • Transfer Tape
  • Cutting Mat & Weeding Tools
  • Christmas Embellishments
  • Hot Glue

How to Make a Pallet Christmas Tree

First, give your unfinished wood a quick sanding with some sand paper to make sure it’s smooth. Wipe off the dust with a soft cloth.

Next, measure the boards. This is REALLY important, so you can space out your text on your tree. Make a note of the measurements, because you will need them in a few steps.

Using the craft paint, coat the wood tree with the paint. I only did one coat so it has more of a washed look to it. Set this aside to dry.

While this is drying, set up your cut file on your Silhouette Design software.

Add your text line by line. Size each one according to the space it will be adhered to. When I had mine placed on my design screen, it sort of looked like a Christmas tree, ascending from smallest to largest.

Add your vinyl of choice to your cutting mat, and load it into the machine. Set the machine to cut Glossy Adhesive Vinyl, and send it to cut.

Remove the cutting mat, and gently remove the vinyl from it. Cut it into smaller pieces-line by line. And then start weeding it.

From here, apply a piece of transfer tape over the weeded vinyl, and add it to the tree. Gently peel back from the corner at an angle to remove the transfer tape. It’s a good idea to smooth over after you have adhered it with a burnishing tool.

After your text has been applied, it’s time to add some embellishments! You can find so many cute, small ornaments and decorations around this time of year. I picked up some mini ornaments from the craft store, and added them to my tree in various places with hot glue.

Your DIY Pallet Christmas Tree is ready to display! There is SO much you can do to personalize and decorate these!
