Silhouette Cameo Tips: How to Use Group and Ungroup
Do you have several Silhouette files you’d like to put together to create something special? You like the font or quote from one file, but you really think it would look extra cute with an accent ~such as a leaf, flower, maybe an arrow? Today, I am going to show you how to achieve that with a few clicks in you Silhouette software!

One of my favorite tools in Silhouette Design Studio is the Group/Ungroup tool. This allows me to take parts and pieces of files and put them together to create something unique. It’s one of those tools that I think every user of the Silhouette Design Studios will really appreciate an use often if they know its capability. I have put together some tips for you to use Group/Ungroup in your software to create something special!
What does it mean to group or ungroup my files
When you “group” files in your design software, you are putting them all together. This allows you to move them and size them as one group, instead of individual pieces. Work with your text and shapes grouped together makes it easier to size them for your cut file. It also allows you to work with layers more efficiently. It allows you to manipulate the entire design. When you “ungroup” files, this takes them apart. In turn, grouping them puts them back together. Let me show you how…but first this is what you need to create this design.

After my pieces were cut, I used transfer tape to apply them to my metal jug, and added a few artificial flowers to finish it up! I chose to use the Matte Removable Vinyl from Style Tech Craft for my laurel leaves so I can change this out seasonally. The silver polished metal vinyl for the BE JOYFUL text is perfect year round…but I can easily change up the accents with some brown and orange leaves for fall, or even some light blue or navy snowflakes for Christmas or winter. I LOVE the variety of colors and finishes from StyleTech Craft. I can always find a perfect shade or finish for my projects.
Learning how to use the Group/Ungroup function on your software can really be a game changer for your creativity. I often download cut files because there is an aspect of it that I love and want to use. Or, I want to personalize it and need to move a few things around so I can get exactly the look and spacing that I want. I think this is a necessary thing to learn, especially as a beginner. You will be amazed at how you can transform the parts of several files into one perfect design for your project!
