DIY Fall Welcome Sign

Creating a DIY Fall Sign is an easy way to spruce up your decor as we move into the fall season!  You don’t have to be a professional wood worker to create a pretty fall wood sign for your home!  This post will show you how to make a nice wood sign with just a few simple supplies and steps!

I am a member of the StyleTech Craft Design Team. I was provided product from StyleTech Craft for this post. This post may contain affiliate links.  See my full disclosure and privacy policy HERE. All opinions are my own.

You don’t have to search far to see the popularity of wood signs.  Just take a quick tour on Etsy, or even a stroll through Hobby Lobby, and they are everywhere!  Wood signs are crazy popular….and crazy easy to DIY!  If you have a Cricut, or other vinyl machine, you can create a fall DIY Wood Sign in no time!

Strolling through the craft store, there are more and more “blanks” options to add vinyl and create your own!  Our local Hobby Lobby has a giant section, full of different sizes and shapes of wood to create something amazing!

I prefer to purchase the already painted, or finished, wood pieces. The white wood pieces with a frame around them are my favorite.  And while I love the end result of pallets, adding the vinyl isn’t quite as easy.  For this project, I wanted something simple to add to our mantle, so I went with a smooth, already finished piece.

For this month’s Style TechCraft, our vinyl was our choice!  I love these months….the Ultra Metallic FX is my favorite from StyleTech, so I made sure to incorporate that!  I also really love to mix the vinyl types.  For this project, a matte finish and the metallic were the perfect combination!

Supplies for a DIY Fall Sign:

  • Blank piece of wood
  • Cricut or other vinyl cutting machine
  • Style Tech Craft Ultra Metallic FX Vinyl & Matte Vinyl
  • Soft cloth
  • Transfer Tape
  • Burnishing Tool
  • Weeding Tools

How to make a DIY Fall Sign:

  • First, wipe over your wood piece with a soft, micro fiber cloth.  You want to get all the dust and little particles off so your vinyl will stick well.
  • Next, set up your cut file in your design software.  I started by adding the text to “WELCOME”, minus the “O”.  My “O” is a pumpkin, so I typed it without the “O”.  Then, add the pumpkin shape onto your design screen. I had a cute pumpkin in my library already, so I used that one.

  • Add the pumpkin as the “O”.  When you have it in place, “Group” your text and your pumpkin so it’s all one word.  From here, you can size it to fit on your wood piece.
  • Next, type “TO OUR HOME” in your font of choice. Center this under the “welcome”.  When it is time to cut, pull the “TO OUR HOME” off of the cut screen, and set it aside.
  • I cut my pumpkin and “TO OUR HOME” in the Metallic FX.  To do so, I ungrouped the “Welcome”, and slid the pumpkin down on the design screen.  Then, I Grouped the “WELC  ME” and removed that completely from the design screen.  I placed the pumpkin and the “To Our Home” on the cut screen, set up my cut to cut Metallic Vinyl.  Load the Metallic Vinyl on your mat and send it to cut.  I cut mine on two passes, to make it easier to weed later.
  • To cut the “WELC   ME”, remove the pumpkin and “To Our Home” to the side, so they are in the gray area outside your design area.  Set your machine to cut the matte vinyl.  Load it on your mat, and send it to cut.
  • After your designs are cut, start to weed the excess so you are left with just your design.

How to apply the vinyl to the wood sign:

  • Lay your decal face up, with the backing still in tact.  Gently place a piece of transfer tape on it, and trim off any excess. I find the more transfer tape I have, the more it gets in my way when applying a decal.
  • Remove the backing of your decal slowly.

  • With the decal facing sticky side out fold it in half but not all the way, just enough to you have an idea of where the center lies.
  • Center your “WELC  ME” on your wood sign.
  • Starting from the center of your decal and the center of your sign (or wherever you want it) gently set the decal onto your sign.
  • Start with one side, and gently guide the decal down onto the sign and repeat for the other side.
  • Now take your burnishing tool and gently push the decal down WITH THE TRANSFER TAPE STILL ON. The transfer tape will protect your vinyl from scratches.  Gently “scrape” your burnishing tool over the transfer tape to make sure the vinyl is sticking to the wood.

  • Gently peel the transfer tape away from your decal at an angle, starting in one of the top corners.  Keep it tight to the sign, don’t just rip it off.

Tips for creating a diy fall sign:

  • Mix up script and non script fonts.  My “Fashionable Fonts” board on Pinterest is one of my favorites for inspiration!
  • When sizing your design, allow yourself 2-3 inches at each end of the board to center the design on the board.  If your board is 18 inches long, only make your design about 12 inches long, for example.
  • Use a clean, micro fiber cloth to thoroughly wipe down the board before applying the vinyl.
  • Using a pre finished, smooth piece of wood should give you good results.  The vinyl will stick well to this surface!
  • You should not need to seal the vinyl, or put any sort of clear coat over it.
